When toxic fluids like oil, grease, and anti-freeze make their way into
the storm drain system, they do not get treated before reaching Alamo and Ulatis creeks or other waterways, potentially harming wildlife and the quality of our deep water wells; one of our drinking water sources. Follow these simple steps to keep pollution out of the storm drain system.
- Repair leaking vehicles quickly to prevent
fluid leaks on driveways and streets which
will be washed into the storm drains when it
rains.
- Never hose down spills to the gutter.
Instead clean spills using absorbent material
like kitty litter; sweep up and place in trash
receptacle
- If you change your own oil or antifreeze, recycle it. Do not throw it
in the trash, on the ground, or into a storm drain. Motor oil and
antifreeze contains toxic chemicals that are harmful to humans and
animals.
- Take antifreeze and other automobile fluids to the Household
Hazardous Waste facility located at the Vacaville Sanitary Service
Recycling Center, 855 1/2 Davis Street in Vacaville. No
appointments are necessary for this service. The center is open on
every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
