Storm drains, like the one in the picture on the right, are intended to prevent flooding by carrying rainwater away from homes and streets directly to the nearest street or waterway.
Stormwater pollution is created when rainwater or even runoff from sprinklers or garden hoses wash pollutants such as: yard waste, detergents, motor oil, pet waste, pesticides and fertilizers from driveways, backyards, parking lots, and streets into storm drains where it flows untreated to the nearest creek or other waterway.
